Pan’s Labyrinth: Review

March 13th, 2007 | Category: Film Reviews

Pan’s Labyrinth also known as El Labertino del Fauno (Labyrinth of the Faun) is centered around a girl who loves reading fairy tales who is living in fascist Spain in 1944 with her pregnant mother. Ofelia, the young girl is sent with her mother to live with her stepfather who happens to be a ruthless and coldhearted captain of the Spanish army.
Ofelia meets a fairy which brings her to a faun who says she’s a princess but must prove herself by completing 3 tasks.

I thought this movie was incredible and it intertwined aspects of politics with Ofelia’s fantasy world that just made this movie wonderful. I really don’t know what to say but that is was incredible. I did have a hard time at some points where I was reading the subtitles more then I was watching.

This movie gets a 4.5/5 in the end. I would agree that The Departed beat it out but not by a far margin.

300: Review

March 11th, 2007 | Category: Zach Snyder, Film Reviews

300 if you haven’t seen the trailer online is about the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartan warriors took on a believed army of around 2 million. It is based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City, Elektra, Daredevil).

This movie received a lot of free advertisement and hype from the internet. Unlike Snakes on a Plane which people thought to be stupid and REALLY annoying due to all the advertisement that probably wrecked its image, it worked well for 300 and it seemed like everyone wanted to go and see this movie.

This movie is short on stars in the cast, like who’s heard of Gerard Butler(Phantom of the Opera, Tomb Raider), Lena Headey(The Cave, Brothers Grimm), or Dominic West (Chicago). I personally off hand wouldn’t know before I’ve seen this movie who these guys would be. The only person I knew was David Wenham from Lord of the Rings as Faramir.

Anyway as there are not much to the plot as if you follow the history and click the link, that’s the story for you. As for action, it did not disappoint as I felt I paid what I came to see. The computer graphics were awesome, the slow motion killings added a nice touch and I don’t really see a hint of Montreal there. It would’ve had me believing it was in Greece.

I think it may have been unnecessary to see some sex scenes and some naked oracle girl but hey I’m not complaining. Some people didn’t like the fact that it included the ficional aspect such as making some monsters which you would see in LOTR and making the Immortals look like they came from hell. If you insist on having this movie follow every historical fact you will probably overlook the movie. In addition, the Spartans seemed to not really have a strategy and it seemed pointless to what they were doing such as stacking bodies to only later knock it down and only kill one Immortal –really ineffective use of hard work don’t you say?

Overall, this movie isn’t bad and while I thought it was good for it’s action, it isn’t any Gladiator which would garner a 5 out of 5. However due to leaving me satisfied it does get a solid 4 out of 5.
