Rear Window (1954) Review

May 30th, 2007 | Category: Film Reviews

Rear Window was made in 1954 and is called Alfred Hitchcock’s best. It stars famouus actors (not to me since I am just a little boy) James Stewart and Grace Kelly. Stewart plays an injured photographer LB Jefferies who is stuck to his wheelchair.

Bored with nothing to do Jefferies spies on his neighbors and into their personal life. He would later suspect a neighbour for murdering his wife after watching him for a length of time. Jefferies becomes obsessed with watching his neighbours and tries to tell the police to disbelieving ears.

I am generally not a fan of older movies but this movie was good but not in one of those amazing films you HAVE to see. I really liked the dialogue in this movie as well the vast array of characters involved in this movie. There was some foreshadowing and it ends up being decent in the end. I give it 4 stars out of 5. Not what I expected out of the #13 movie on IMDB but most movies end up being a disappointment with such high expectations.

The Simpson’s Parody of Rear Window that inspired me to watch this movie:

Murderball (2005) Review

May 30th, 2007 | Category: Film Reviews

Murderball is a documentary by Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro.

Murderball is used to be the former name for wheelchair rugby which was developed in Canada but has more rules like hockey and handball and of course it includes contract with the Mad Max like wheel chairs for hard hitting.

The movie Murderball covers players on the USA team as well and really brings disabled people to a new light. It centers around the rivalry between US and Canada caused by former star USA player Joe Soares who was disgruntled after being left off the team and went over to Canada to coach.
This movie really shows how the guys in wheelchairs are able to live a satisfying life when it comes to issues like sex, overcoming the fact that they are wheelchair bound and really being normal and strong people. The sex storyline was very funny, and one of the guys spirit lifted up when he realized he could play wheelchair rugby after an motorcross accident.

I liked this movie it was good, I do recommend watching it. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Se7en (1995) : Review

Se7en is a movie that stars Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt who are two detectives one is retiring and one becoming his replacement. David Fincher who also did a favorite of mine, Fight Club produced this movie.

Se7en is #39 on IMDB’s Top Movies List. I was expecting a great movie.

The movie Se7en from it’s name is about a serial murderer who kills people for being guilty of one of the seven deadly sins (glutton, wrath, pride, envy, lust, sloth and greed). The two detectives Mills (Pitt) and Somerset (Freeman) set out to try to find him.

This movie was as one would expect considering the plot outline with the seven deadly sins, as a random person with no connection to the story would be killed off in an albeit unique way to die considering their sin. I had trouble keeping interest in this movie as it really didn’t compel me to keep my attention on things. The type of evidence and new leads found in this movie was too predictable as something was always popping up.

The only good thing about this movie for me was the strange ending. I won’t spoil it but it is the only good thing about this movie. I am not sure the ending was worth the wait for the ending as I doubt I will see this movie again simply because I didn’t really like it that much. I am giving it a 2.5 out of 5. I probably won’t recommend to you since I felt bored in most of it and I didn’t really understand why it was liked so much.

American Beauty (1999): Review

May 19th, 2007 | Category: Thora Birch, Kevin Spacey, Film Reviews

American Beauty was the Oscar Winning movie that took home Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor among others. This movie has been called overrated by some.

This movie is about Lester Burnham a man who is in a mid-life crisis. He hates his job in which he is about to be fired from, he hates his marriage in which he has to masturbate in the shower every morning and he is losing touch with his only daughter. Lester falls in love with his daughter’s friend Angela Hayes and starts to feel alive again and tries to turn his life around.

I thought this movie was great. Great message and a great performance and it had me laughing for most of the time. I didn’t really know what to expect when watching this movie other then the weird plot outline that he likes a younger girl. I didn’t really concentrate much on this storyline but the movie had great characters each unique in their own way. My favourite character has to be drug dealer Ricky Fitts who is weird but an interesting character. I really don’t know what else to say other then this was a great movie and I really really liked it. I was entertained and there was a great story behind it and I watched this right after I saw Pulp Fiction and thought this was a better movie. 5 out of 5.

Pulp Fiction (1994) Review

Vince and Jules Pulp Fiction is the critically acclaimed film directed by the famous Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction is the #5 rated film on IMDB’s Top 250 list and my friends declared this as must see movie and it’s taken me awhile to finally watch it.

The movie involves the lives of two mob hit men Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winfield (Samual L. Jackson) interwined with a boxer named Butch (Bruce Willis), a gangster’s wife named Mia (Uma Thurman) and two diner bandits.

This movie probably has the best script for the actors I have seen with clever lines. The film runs in non-chronological order, which adds another dimension to this movie. I didn’t know what to expect with this movie but I found it funny with its dark humor and the acting was superb if not perfect.

The only problem for me is that while is it rated highly on most movie lists, this is not one of my favourite movies and falls into the class of very good movies I saw. I’m giving a 4.5 out of 5.

Spiderman 3 Review

Topher Grace is VenomSpiderman 3 grossed just over $150 million in North American Box Offices in it’s first weekend clearly breaking records. Coming off the momentum of a great start to Spiderman and even a better follow up with the sequel.

As a Spiderman fan the most exciting part of the cartoon series and the comics as Venom and Carnage so I was really excited to see the 3rd of the trilogy just for that. However the movie for me sucked.

The only thing great about this movie was the fighting. The fighting with all the special effects and quickness really saved this movie from being entirely bashed by me. I really like James Franco as the new goblin/Harry Osborne as he did great job switching back and forth from bad to good.

I am going to outline the bad things here. First off, Topher Grace was a TERRIBLE choice for Venom. Being on That 70s Show everyone liked him with his weak type of voice and scrawniness but when it comes to the character behind Venom he did a terrible job as someone who desperate yet addicted to power. They had to use a different voice when he was in the Venom outfit since his voice wasn’t the strong type you’d expect from a gruesome character like Venom. This really upset me because it was more annoying to hear Venom where it should be more cool.

Hmm what about the plot? Exactly it seemed like there was a lack of plot and whatever it was it wasn’t good. Some girlfriend/boyfriend problems, Spidey acting like a pimp as Venom etc. Nothing special.

The ending sucked. I won’t give away the ending but it was the type of ending that tried to make you cry and it just had more annoyed and irritated as it felt pointless.

I will probably see if Spiderman 4 comes out but I will not be wasting my 10 bucks the next time around. The movie was just poorly done and there really wasn’t much to look forward to anymore as it feels like we’re going to get the same boyfriend/girlfriend drama that just doesn’t belong in comic book movies if it drags on way too long. I give it 2 out of 5.
