Shaolin Soccer (2001) Review

August 31st, 2007 | Category: Stephen Chow, Film Reviews

Bruce Lee Homage in Shaolin Soccer
This movie didn’t really have a lot of selling points for me to watch this movie. The plot synopsis is that a Shaolin Kung Fu follower who is poor needs to find a way to use the art of Shaoin Kung Fu to become rich. He decides soccer is the perfect way to do it and tries to lead his discouraged brothers to learning their old Shaolin skills.

This movie was surprisingly funny with a lot of random jokes, over acting by actors and becoming totally ridiculous. I personally am not a fan of these types of movies but it did make me laugh and that’s what it was set out to do. I give it a 3.5 out of 5. It would receive higher ranking if it had less of the stupid stuff as the main storyline was pretty good I would say.

Pumping Iron (1977) Review

August 29th, 2007 | Category: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Film Reviews

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Pumping Iron is more known for the funny Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes then anything else. Most guys have made fun of this movie and I decided that it couldn’t hurt to watch it.

This is the famous quote most of my friends tend to use in their Arnold-like voice:

It’s as satisfying to me as, uh, cumming is, you know? As, ah, having sex with a woman and cumming. And so can you believe how much I am in heaven? I am like, uh, getting the feeling of cumming in a gym, I’m getting the feeling of cumming at home, I’m getting the feeling of cumming backstage when I pump up, when I pose in front of 5,000 people, I get the same feeling, so I am cumming day and night. I mean, it’s terrific. Right? So you know, I am in heaven.

He is talking about the feeling of pumping iron…LOL
Here’s the clip:
As for the rest of the movie, it was decent for a documentary but nothing special and boring at times as over muscular men is not something of interest for me. It gets a 3.5 out of 5. That clip probably make the day for me though lol.

Superbad Review

August 28th, 2007 | Category: Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Film Reviews

Super Bad Movie Poster
Superbad was the much hyped teen-movie that was a must-see among everyone I knew. It followed up “Knocked Up” which was such a great movie storyline wise and making a huge amount of funny jokes.

Superbad was hyped through the enormous about of trailers and internet hype. Starring the lovable Michael Cera from Arrested Development and the funny Jonah Hill, this movie incites laughter from plain conversation.

The plot like most teenage movies is weak which is them wanting to buy alcohol for a party so they can seduce their crushes. It is funny all-around but if I had one bad thing to say is that this movie was basically ruined for me from the get go.

Why? It was waaaay overhyped and too many commercials gave up a lot of the jokes and the movie. The movie shouldn’t be to blame about the advertising as it would be a great movie without all the trailers. It was still funny in the end and it gets a 4 out of 5. Not in Knocked Up where I laughed like a little girl so it’s a notch below on the funniness level.

The Prestige Review

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale
The prestige stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as the two main characters. Johansson and Caine play smaller yet important roles. Bale and Jackman play two rival magicians who’s rivalry and jealously of one another turns deadly. Both magicians try to foil each of their magic tricks and when the other magician has something special, their obsession makes them go to great lengths to find out how it was done.

There are a lot of mini-side stories that are important for the movie but I think if you already know some of the key plot points beforehand it takes the surprise and coolness out of it. This movie had a lot of great special effects, good acting, awesome twists and had a few themes such as obsession, jealousy, competitiveness and duality. I had no idea David Bowie was in it either.

I realize this one is a weak review but with all the effects, acting and great storyline..I don’t want to ruin it!

I can’t say enough how cool this movie was and I strongly recommend this movie. 5 out 5.

Movies Out This Weekend (August 24th, 2007)

Resurrecting the Champ Poster
There a bunch of movies out this week but none really “I must see this now” type that I’ve experienced this summer with a lot of releases like the Simpsons, Superbad, Transformers etc.

The best critically acclaimed film so far is “Resurrecting the Champ” starring Josh Hartnett and Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson plays a homeless man who refers to himself as “champ” and was actually a boxing champ who’s discovered by a struggling news sportswriter (Hartnett). The reviews are decent so far so it may be worth a download as there aren’t enough sport movies.

Another popular movie coming up today is Mr. Bean’s Holiday. I have never been a fan of the humor displayed by Mr. Bean. I would ask you this…if there was no laughing track would you laugh? I grow tired of Mr. Bean.

I thought a big movie that was “must see” was going to be War with Jason Statham and Jet Li. We want to see this action stars fight and go at it but the reviews aren’t encouraging and some are saying they get 30 seconds of fighting between the two so unless someone says this is “f**king awesome you have to see it” I’ll probably pass for now.

I don’t want to see the Nanny Diaries but it does star the sexy Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately I doubt I will see any cleavage shots in a PG-13 movie so I’ll pass. I expect this movie to end up in my sister’s DVD collection though.

Irreversible (2002) Review

August 25th, 2007 | Category: Film Reviews

Irreversible Poster
Irreversible if you have not heard of is known for a few gruesome scenes. The first is the “fire extinguisher scene” where a character is bashed repeatedly in one of the more gorier scenes I have ever seen. The other is the rape scene which is shown on the poster.

This movie is in reverse chronological order where a boyfriend seeks out revenge after his girlfriend has been raped.

This move in my opinion really sucked. The gore will make you cringe (I downloaded this film for that particular fire extinguisher scene) and the camera work will make you confused and you head spinning (in a bad way). The movie seems direction-less as it is just a story that is backwards for no reason. I don’t really recommend this even if the scene is cool…

This move gets a 1 out of 5 from me. It’s a pretty terrible movie.

Guess that actor - 20 questions #2 Jason Statham

August 24th, 2007 | Category: Contest, Jason Statham

Jason Statham
Who doesn’t like Jason Statham? He is usually in cool movies like the Transporter, Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Crank and women seem to find him hot. He stars in the movie “War” with Jet Li that many of my friends are looking forward to.

The winner of the “Guess that Actor” contest was mcangeli:

Mcangeli’s site is called Delusions of Grandeur who attempts to document his life as he is a father of two and he lives in Georgia as he works in the IT (Information Technology) field. I first thought he was actually a female from the name mcangeli but thankfully I read his about page before writing this. His blog has everything on it. From good wordpress plugins to use to his personal life, his blog is like my home page where I used to post about everything and anything I could. He talks about his daughter being 4 years old and starting school already and how 4 years passes by so quickly in a post and his experience as caring father. Very cool stuff. His blog has a very nice design to it and a very cool plugin where you can rate each of his articles out of 5. Check it out.

Thank you(s) for participating in this week’s contest:

Half Nelson (2006) Review

August 22nd, 2007 | Category: Ryan Gosling, Film Reviews

Ryan Gosling
Half Nelson stars Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps in a movie about a teacher who has a drug habit and he unlikely forms a bond with a student that finds out his secret.

One of the first things I noticed about this movie is that it has a great soundtrack. I am not sure what to make out of this movie. It was good at times and others it just okay. The movie is acted well but I just didn’t think I really felt the true meaning of being in a half nelson when it comes to movies. This movie gets a 3.5 out of 5 from me. Unlike old men and young female bond movies like Lost in Translation and Ghost World this was a step down.
